Rob Stringer |Famous People of Alaska

Rob Stringer with Alaska’s most Famous

There are many famous and talented people from Alaska, ranging from actors and musicians to sportsmen and activists. Like many another red blooded American males, Rob Stringer has his favorite actresses, and one of the more famous Alaskan actresses of recent times is Irene Bedard. She has been in many movies and in 1995 was voted one of America’s top 50 beautiful people by People Magazine. Walt Disney lovers may remember Irene Bedard best as the voice of Pocahontas in the animated film.  She was born in Anchorage. Rob says that there is something about Irene Bedard that reminds him of his wife Sarah – his cousin Ed jokingly says that that’s his excuse.

Rob Stringer Sports Fan

Rob Stringer is into sports big time and his favorite Alaskan sportsman is Shawn Chacon, who was in the Majors for the Houston Astros and is famed for throwing a sinker that travels 88-92 miles and hour. Rob’s other favorite is Daryn Colledge, an offensive player for the Green Bay Packers in the National Football League. In their younger days, Rob Stringer and his cousin Ed used to enjoy snowboarding in the Alaskan mountains. In recent years, Rob has favored Rosey Fletcher, who won an Olympic bronze medal for her part in the women’s Snowboarding Parallel Giant Slalom. Rob Stringer is proud of his extended family’s involvement in human rights activism in Alaska and swears a very distant connection to Elizabeth W. Peratrovich, who was active in the struggle for the rights of native Alaskans. Elizabeth was a key figure in the 1945 Anti-Discrimination Act in Alaska – this was the first such law to be passed in America.

Rob Stringer on Fishing and Hunting in Alaska

Anyone who knows Rob Stringer and his cousin Ed will know that whenever Rob visits Alaska, they go hunting and fishing together, just as they did when they were boys. It is no small wonder that one of their favorite Alaskans is Emmitt Gordon Peters, Sr., the Yukon Fox. Emmitt is an Alaskan dog musher, hunter, trapper and fisher who in 1975 won the Iditarod Trail race for Sled Dogs, and was the last rookie to do so. Ed and Rob Stringer also are both ice hockey fans, having taken part in all kinds of snow sports over the years, and so they follow the East Coast’s Hockey League Alaska Aces. One of the most famous players of the Aces is Jason Ryznar, and Rob and his cousin try to follow his games whenever they can.

No list of famous Alaskans would be complete for Rob Stringer without the addition of Benny Benson, who at the age of 13 designed what became the flag of Alaska. In 1926, Benny took part in a contest designed for students in Alaska from grades 7 through 12. In 1927, the state legislature in Alaska decided to adopt Benny’s design as the Territory of Alaska’s official flag. When Alaska attained state hood in 1959, the territorial flag then became the official state flag. While there are many more famous Alaskans, this covers some of Rob Stringer all time favorites.
